All 52 cards are dealt equally among 4 players — 13 cards each. The dealer rotates each round. On phenjoy48, dealing is instant and automatic.
Before play begins, each player declares how many tricks (hands) they expect to win that round. You must bid at least 1. Your bid is your contract — meet it or face a penalty.
The player to the dealer's right leads the first card. Others must follow suit if possible. If you can't follow suit, you may play any card — including a spade to trump the trick.
The highest card of the led suit wins — unless a spade was played, in which case the highest spade wins. The trick winner leads the next card.
